Power BI Proof-Of-Concept

Content & objective

The customer is considering Microsoft Power BI as a Business Analytics solution for Data Discovery, Self Service BI & Dashboarding to deliver insights throughout its organisation. In a collaborative effort, element61 and the customer will work together in one or more of the following areas: reporting, analysis, KPIs and scorecards, dashboarding, and storytelling – to enable a test and evaluation of the Power BI solution.

Unlike a software demonstration that uses a generic data set, the proof-of-concept will use one or more data sources from the customer. The business context is recognizable and relevant. The proof-of-concept may serve multiple objectives:

  • to raise awareness for the need of a business analytics initiative and investment in a tool
  • to introduce the solution in the organisation, create visibility and generate buy-in from the user community
  • to confirm a match with technical and functional requirements
  • to facilitate a knowledgeable decision to proceed with the technology or not.

Scope & content

Like with any project assignment the scope of the proof-of-concept will need to be determined and documented. This includes definition of:

  • business areas or processes for reporting, analysis and data visualisation
  • data sources that will be worked with
  • measures and key performance indicators the customer wants to see
  • dimensions that give meaning to the measures and KPIs
  • tables and visualisation types
  • business user community and information recipients the insights are intended for.

element61’s default way of working is one of Coaching and Co-development. We extract, transfer & load data and build a data model & set of meaningful visualisations together with our customer. We focus on knowledge transfer. This includes demonstration and usage of Power BI features & capabilities and application of visualisation best practices.

POC deliverable

The proof-of-concept results is a working Microsoft Power BI report or dashboard prototype. This deliverable is presented by element61 to the assignment’s business sponsor and the customer’s executive management. The session encourages Q&A and customer feedback. The presentation includes recommendations for next steps and a roadmap to production including an estimate on costs and timeline.

POC duration & rate

The duration of the Power BI proof-of-concept is typically 3 to 4 days, decided in function of the scope, as agreed with the customer prior to the assignment start. This assignment is executed on a fixed price basis, at a daily rate of 1.050 euro/day. In case the mission is finalised sooner, the customer will only be billed the effective number of days performed.

The assignment will be executed by a Senior or Principal Business Analytics Architect of element61. All our consultant profiles can be found in the team section of the company website.
