Patiënt friendly letters

The ZAS (Ziekenhuis aan de stroom) project is a collaborative effort to improve medical communication by translating Dutch medical letters into patient-friendly formats in French and English. Using AI, the team generates both line-by-line and summary translations, enriched with medication lists and glossaries to enhance clarity. A key goal is to simplify language to B1 level, making it more accessible to patients. Layout and formatting are being refined. Feedback from patients and doctors is actively shaping improvements, while FHIR bundles are being tested in Azure to support structured data exchange. A Function App is being developed to automate delivery of the final letters. s. The project is not just about translation—it’s about rethinking how medical information is shared. Ultimately, ZAS aims to make healthcare communication more empathetic, accurate, and effective. This project is a collaboration of ZAS, UZ Brussel & AZ Maria Middelares and is funded by the federal government.
