Michiel Van Brusselen has achieved a Master of Civil Engineering Technology -specialization construction- from the University of Antwerp in 2017. He completed his final master's year as a structural engineer at Planet Engineering in Brasschaat. His master's thesis was about the automation of a slurry wall calculation, for which source data were manipulated by using Python and REST API calls. For a data analysis project, in which the energy balance of a house was being investigated and optimised, he gained additional data analysis and visualization experience in Power BI and the Azure data platform.
After completing the master's thesis, Michiel started at Cropland as a Junior Data Scientist. As a consultant he has conducted various tasks: from counting and analyzing visitor numbers, defining master data management processes, maintaining data quality, to ETL actions on data sources. He also gained knowledge by developing analyses in Python with the help of Azure Databricks and Jupyter.
His initial Data Science activities and his work around data management & ETL motivated him to choose for a career in Microsoft Analytics.
Michiel joined element61 in 2020.
During his first months at element61, Michiel was involved in the migration of an on-premise data warehouse solution towards an Microsoft Azure cloud environment. This included the automation of Azure Data Factory pipelines, tranfsorming data from an on-premises SQL Server Database into dimensions and facts hosted in Azure Synapse Analytics. The full process was automated, using CI/CD principles, with ARM templates in Azure DevOps. As part of his Personal Development Plan (and in line with Cloud evolution) Michiel also certified as Azure Data Engineer Associate.
