Building a Trusted Research Environment (TRE)

As part of the European SPECTRE-HD initiative, element61 supported UZ Brussel in the design and implementation of a Trusted Research Environment (TRE) to enable secure and privacy-compliant reuse of health data. The project aimed to align with the upcoming European Health Data Space (EHDS) regulation and was executed in collaboration with other Belgian university hospitals (UZA, ZOL, Saint Luc). The TRE platform was delivered as a secure, metadata-driven environment supporting both primary and secondary use of health data. element61 led the end-to-end technical architecture & build based on Microsoft’s Azure TRE blueprint, facilitated stakeholder workshops with DPO, CISO, and data governance teams, and implemented the automated research workspaces and Power Platform-based case management. The solution served as a proof-of-value for future national-scale rollout in Belgium
