Tom Pauwels started his Performance Management & Business Intelligence career in 1999 at Atlas Copco, after over 6 years in IT Project Management roles. Following the principles of Ralph Kimball, he set up a data warehouse and reporting suite to focus on Cost Control (Activity Based Costing) for the Atlas Copco Airtec division. Having gained interest in business analysis & business decision making, he successfully pursued a full time Master of Business Administration in Dublin followed by an exchange project in Shanghai at CEIBS.
His primary degree in Engineering, option Electro Mechanics, the combined knowledge of Business Intelligence and the MBA paid well off for Komatsu where he designed and implemented a European Performance Management suite annex forecasting tool for Finance, Treasury, Sales and Marketing and HR, between 2002 and 2010. Intermittently he wore the hat of Business Analyst, Project Management and Software developer. Because large scale Business Analytics projects need a structured approach, Tom deepened and extended during the last number of years his project management skills, executing projects in PMI-style, PRINCE2-style for various international companies to end with the Agile/Scrum approach with which he got the best results.
Throughout his career, Tom used SQL with all leading database-technologies and, working with TM1 since 2002, Tom has become an expert in IBM Cognos TM1.
He still swears about the tool and welcomes the investments and improvements thanks to the acquisition by Cognos and later by IBM. Tom has worked with all TM1 versions since 2002 and recently implemented projects using the most recent version IBM Cognos TM1 10.1 at Airbus (F), AB Inbev (B) and Roche(CH). Forecasting, Volume Mix analysis, Actual vs Budget comparisons, Consolidations, Latest Estimate, Capex, Cogs, Life Cycle management, … all can and has been successfully implemented by Tom, using IBM Cognos TM1. Clients appreciate most the broad industry experience, the new insights, and the team approach that he brings to the table.
Recently he added Anaplan to his skill set and because of his prior knowledge he immediately hit the ground running and successfully took on assignments as a lead consultant in this technology.
Next to a busy family life, Tom enjoys swimming, playing grass hockey and being a hockey coach for the teams of his children. He won’t say no to a game of colonists of Catan.
