Data Scientist
Matheus graduated from UCLouvain with a Master in Computer Engineering in AI. He also brings a richer background than his diploma suggests. He holds a first degree in Computer Engineering from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUC-PR) in Brazil, with a focus on both hardware and software, and built his early career through internships at companies like Siemens and energy consultancy firms.
His end-of-studies project was already a glimpse of things to come: a Computer Vision tool designed to help physically, and visually impaired individuals navigate obstacles on the sidewalk. It was AI and Data that led him to Belgium, and eventually to element61 in Brussels, where he has been sharpening his engineering skills and developing his data analysis practice using cloud computing services. His latest thesis was about combining disruption-tolerant networks with cloud services and bird chant recognition, where both his AI and ETL workflow skills were needed. He's always been more interested in the why behind the numbers than the numbers themselves.
That same instinct showed up during his early university years, as Matheus worked as a teaching assistant for Calculus and Algebra, where he discovered that explaining something well is one of the best ways to truly understand it. He tries to bring that same energy to collaborative work, where he's at his best brainstorming in a team, thinking out loud, and building ideas together.
Away from the screen, Matheus is somewhere between a sports enthusiast, a social animal, and a passionate gamer, sometimes all on the same day. He also has a soft spot for languages: alongside his native Portuguese, he speaks English, French, and Spanish.
Matheus will join element61 in September 2026.
